System flood safety – float housing

Recently we had a customer who had installed a filter system in his sample system to protect an online analyser. This sample system comprised of a coalescing filter followed by a finer particulate filter. The customer wanted to be certain that any liquid being removed by the coalescing filter was draining away from the housing bowl – if it built up the liquid could flood the system and reach the analyser. He could not use a housing with a glass bowl to visually monitor the liquid situation due the pressure of the system.

The Problem

Most sample systems do not see a large amount of liquid, but liquid can build up from the coalesced aerosols and droplets and if the service intervals to drain the liquid off are not frequent enough or the system is seeing too much liquid this can get carried over and reach the analyser. Even if a membrane housing is fitted and enough liquid gets to the membrane there is a chance it can breach it and head for the analyser.

The Solution

For such situations we developed a float housing which gives a safe, simple solution, if the float housing sees too much liquid the float rises and shuts the flow off to the analyser. This in turn will alarm out saving an expensive service bill and alerting the engineers that the filters need servicing.

The housing is based around our SS127 housing but because the bowl is machined slightly differently, and because of the float it’s pressure rating is reduced to 100 bar. To keep the housings chemical resistance the float ball is constructed from PVDF and the whole unit is compact and comes in a choice of port sizes as usual.
